Classic Gem Pearls
The pearl is produced by a mollusk when there exists an impurity, such as a grain of sand, in its body. Mother-of-pearl is the layer to which the body parts are attached and line the inside of the shell. The mollusk’s tissue will wrap around the grain of sand and start to deposit protective layers of nacre (mother-of-pearl) around it. Pearls come in a wide range of colors, types, and shapes. They can be white, cream, pink, black, grey, etc. and some of the types are Oriental, Ceylon, Tahitian, Australian, Panama, and Freshwater. The shape can be perfectly round, pear-shaped, egg-shaped, button-shaped, half pearls, etc. The value of the pearl depends on all of these factors. A strand of pearls around the neck as well as a pair of pearl earring studs have been a classic item for women of a broad age-range.
